Kaushala-skill develops characters through a visual art workshop in puppetry, mural painting, and kathakali makeup with respected experts in these fields.
This programme offers three week training in techniques.
The workshop is offered to puppeteers, teachers, makers and artists who wish to expand and deepen their skill in making and presenting.

There will be intense hands on workshop on building mechanisms for puppets including different animal characters and properties to aid the story. You will be introduced to the ancient techniques and the fundamentals in puppet making, natural dye, and preparation for the show. This workshop provides the participant the chance to work side by side with premier puppet artists, learning skills and techniques from them and resulting in a short viewing by the public at the end of the programme.

You will be able to discuss with the artists about your own
style of work and develop new ways to incorporate the keralan style
of puppet making in your work. You will also be introduced to the
traditional colour making techniques with vegetable pigments and
natural materials, thus leading to workshops in the
elaborate kathakali costume and makeup and Mural painting.

The keralan puppetry wears ornaments and dress like Kathakali dancers.
The colour making and most characters in puppetry, Kathakali and
Mural painting are common. The differences in presentation will be
looked at in terms of stage for puppetry, kathakali performance and the
preparation of the wall for Mural painting. |
Weekly activities
|
The first two weeks will be general workshops in Puppet making,
kathakali makeup and Mural painting.
There is an option of attending dance or yoga classes as a warm up early morning.
The last week will be working with the artists with your individual
interest in the respective art forms working towards a final showing
for a small group of friends and local children from the village.

Fee
The residency fee is £ 600 including all activities, accommodation and food.materials £40. additional £ 75 for research and development.
